Improvement made to Technical Report (Team Conservo)

6 Methodology

This report follows wholly on the information and research gathered using the following methods:

6.1 Obtaining Photographic Evidence in SIT@Dover

Our team stayed in school up till 10pm from the duration of 23 October 2017 to 27 October 2017 to investigate the different areas of the school, mainly the University Services Centre and Academic Plaza. The number of classrooms added up to 34 and it does not include computer, engineering and scientific laboratories. From our observations, we then took pictures of the classrooms where lighting units were left turned on. We have also tabulated the observation result at the end of the week. (See appendix C). These classrooms would be the places where the PIR motion sensors are installed.

6.2 Identification of Students’ Opinions

A survey that consists of 5 questions was conducted by our team on students’ habits (if they turn off the lights), and their feedback on having motion sensors in classrooms to control the lights was taken into account. We have a total number of 60 respondents that consists of both student and staff of SIT. The results were then analyzed and used to support the notion that motion sensors in classrooms would help the institute to cut utilities costs. (Refer to appendix A)

6.3 Product Selection Through Online Research

In order to recommend solutions for the institute, the team performed online research on the most suitable product. After a series of requirements that were taken into considerations, the team scaled down to 3 main products which are mentioned in chapter 5. Each product was carefully evaluated through a number of considerations and conditions identified by the team, and chosen as the ideal product for the proposed solution.

As our team have missed out a number of information in the methodology, we have met up to discuss and made improvements to this chapter.

First, the range of dates that the team have stayed back for the investigation is now stated explicitly.

We have also failed to specify the number of people that we have surveyed and the number of questions.

The research quantity was also not stated to tell readers the number of products that we have found and how did we find it.

Through the comments given by Brad, we are now able to identify and learn from our mistakes. This will serve as a good learning experience for us to do better in our future technical reports.
